South Africa have been dealt a major blow ahead of their second-round World Cup clash against Namibia in Aichi next weekend with tighthead prop Trevor Nyakane ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a calf injury.

Nyakane suffered the blow during the tournament opener against New Zealand at International Stadium Yokohama last weekend when he was replaced in the 54th minute.

“It’s very tough on Trevor. He has had a great season and added value whenever he took the field," said Erasmus.

“It’s a blow to him and the team, but it’s also an opportunity for Thomas and for Vincent (Koch), who now have the chance to step up.”

As a result, the 30-year-old will be replaced by Thomas du Toit, who will join the squad in Japan on Monday. Du Toit has featured in 10 Tests since his debut in June last year with his last appearance coming during the World Cup warm-up game against Argentina in Pretoria last month.

Following their 23-13 defeat against New Zealand, the Springboks will face Namibia, Italy and Canada on 28th September, 4th and 8th October respectively.
