South Africa 16-33 New Zealand, Johannesburg

New Zealand made a strong start to their four-match series against South Africa with a clinical 33-16 win over the Springboks in Johannesburg.

The All Blacks were outscored in terms of territory and pressure for long spells, but they made far better use of their chances. South Africa led 13-12 at half-time, yet New Zealand dominated the second half and finished with five tries to the Springboks’ one.

Will Jordan scored twice, while Josh Moorby, Fabian Holland and Luke Jacobson also crossed. Ruben Love kicked four conversions, while Cheslin Kolbe scored 11 points for South Africa before leaving the field injured.

Springboks Take Narrow Half-Time Lead

South Africa opened the scoring after five minutes when Kolbe kicked a close-range penalty.

New Zealand replied four minutes later through Jordan, who was making his first tour appearance after returning from injury. The winger beat Grant Williams and finished in the corner to put the All Blacks ahead.

The Springboks were forced into an early change when Kurt-Lee Arendse failed a head injury assessment. His replacement, Andre Esterhuizen, soon made an impact by shrugging off Moorby’s tackle to score South Africa’s only try. Kolbe converted to make it 10-5.

New Zealand responded again when Tupou Vaa’i’s offload released Moorby to score. Love converted, but Kolbe’s second penalty nudged South Africa back in front at 13-12 by half-time.

All Blacks Take Control After Break

New Zealand lost Ethan de Groot and Josh Lord to head injuries before the interval, but they returned after the break with greater control.

Kolbe kicked another penalty seven minutes into the second half to extend South Africa’s lead to 16-12. But the match then turned sharply in New Zealand’s favour.

Holland blocked Williams’ clearance and scored, before Jacobson powered over from a five-metre scrum. Love converted both tries to give the All Blacks a 26-16 lead.

Jordan Seals Clinical Victory

South Africa’s problems deepened when Kolbe limped off and was replaced by Cobus Reinach. The Springboks later finished with 13 men after Marco van Staden and Reinach were both shown yellow cards.

New Zealand punished the late disruption. Jordan grabbed his second try in the closing stages after collecting a long pass from captain Ardie Savea, with Love adding the conversion.

The result gave the All Blacks a commanding opening win in the series and showed their ability to absorb pressure before punishing South Africa’s missed chances.
