Sale Sharks centre Sam James has signed a new four-year contract with the English Premiership club ahead of the 2016/17 season.

After joining the club in 2013, the 22-year-old had a fabulous previous season where he scored seven tries for the club from 24 games. He also represented the England Saxons side during their recent tour of South Africa which they won 2-0.

Director of rugby at Sale Sharks Steve Diamond said he was impressed by James' outing with the club in the 2015/16 season and believes the 6 ft 4 in centre has the ability to represent the red rose team in future.

"Sam is a fantastic young English player, who took his opportunity well last season," Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond told the official club website.

"In addition to the Premiership, Sam will be playing in the European Champions Cup against Scarlets, Toulon and holders Saracens this season, against some of the greatest players in the game.

"I have every confidence he will build on his first full season with us and am sure he will be pushing towards an England call up in the not too distant future."

Delighted to have an opportunity to play in the Champions Cup in the upcoming season, James is targeting a better finish for the club in the upcoming season.

"I am delighted to have signed a long-term deal with the club.

"We are looking to build on last season's sixth-place finish in the Premiership and finish in the top four.

"The European Champions Cup will also be a great opportunity for us to show what we can do."

Earlier, Sale Sharks also announced a four-year deal for forward Cameron Neild.
