Harlequins 17-26 Sale Sharks, Twickenham Stoop

Harlequins were knocked out of the Investec Champions Cup after Sale Sharks secured a 26-17 victory in a physical and tense round-of-16 clash at The Stoop.

Sale built their win on first-half control, strong set-piece work and the reliable boot of George Ford, before resisting a late Harlequins comeback to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Quins had an early chance close to the Sale try line but were denied, and the visitors gradually took charge through territory and discipline. Ford kicked three penalties to give Sale a 9-0 lead as Harlequins struggled to turn pressure into points.

Ford And Cowan-Dickie Put Sale In Control

Harlequins were also forced into an early reshuffle when Luke Northmore left the field for a head injury assessment. Jarrod Evans came on, which pushed Marcus Smith to full-back.

The hosts did create one of the better attacking moments of the half when Evans put Rodrigo Isgró through a gap, but the final pass to Cadan Murley did not stick.

Sale continued to look the more composed side and extended their lead late in the half through Luke Cowan-Dickie, who powered over from a driving maul. Soon after, Harlequins suffered another setback when Will Evans was shown a yellow card, leaving the home side down to 14 men.

Nick David thought he had given Quins a lifeline before the break after a sharp attacking move, but the try was ruled out on review for a touchline infringement. Sale went into halftime with a deserved 16-0 advantage.

Quins Fight Back In The Second Half

The second half started badly for Harlequins as continued ill-discipline allowed Ford to kick another penalty and stretch the lead to 19-0.

Quins finally got on the scoreboard when Chandler Cunningham-South, introduced at halftime, finished a sweeping move with a powerful run over the line. But Sale hit back again through their maul, with Cowan-Dickie scoring his second try of the match.

To make matters worse for the hosts, Jack Kenningham was then sent to the sin bin for repeated infringements, leaving Quins with another major disciplinary problem as Sale moved 26-5 ahead.

Dombrandt Double Gives Quins Hope

Harlequins refused to fold and produced a strong late rally. Jarrod Evans stepped past two defenders and sent captain Alex Dombrandt through from distance for Quins’ second try.

Dombrandt then struck again after reacting quickly to a loose cross-field kick, cutting the gap to 26-17 and setting up a tense finish.

Sale nearly sealed the match with another try late on, only for the effort to be ruled out for a knock-on over the line. That kept Harlequins alive, but the visitors stayed composed in the closing moments and held firm to secure the win.
