Sale Sharks have confirmed that Welsh international prop Nicky Smith will join the club ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The experienced loosehead has agreed a three-year contract and will move to the AJ Bell Stadium after completing the current campaign with Leicester Tigers.

Smith, 31, was born in Swansea and began his rugby journey with Waunarlwydd RFC before representing Aberavon.

He started his professional career with the Ospreys in 2012 and went on to become a mainstay for the Welsh region, making around 200 appearances across domestic and European competitions.

Ahead of the 2024/25 season, Smith joined Leicester Tigers. During his time at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, he has featured more than 30 times and was named in the Gallagher PREM Team of the Season last year, following consistent performances in the front row.

Smith made his Wales debut in 2014 against Fiji and has since established himself as a reliable international option. He has earned 59 Test caps and featured during the most recent Autumn Nations Series, adding to his experience at the highest level of the game.

Speaking after agreeing the move, Smith said discussions with director of rugby Alex Sanderson convinced him the club’s ambition and competitive mindset matched his own.

“I spoke to Alex Sanderson and I loved how ambitious he was about what the club wants to achieve. It’s really exciting to be joining a team that is so clear about wanting to win things and compete for every trophy.

“As an opposition player, Sale is always a really tough place to go and as a forward, you know that you need to front up. I’m looking forward to being part of that team from next season."
