Queensland Reds will miss the services of Australia international Jordan Petaia for the remainder of the Super Rugby season following a shoulder injury.

Petaia suffered the blow ahead of his side's recently concluded Super Rugby game against Jaguares which Reds went on to lose 43-27.

The 19-year-old underwent scans this week and is expected to undergo a surgery that will keep him on the sidelines for up to 20 weeks.

The news will be a big blow for Petaia as he recently recovered from a foot injury that he suffered last year forcing out of the first two games of the Super Rugby season.

Petaia's consistency in the domestic circuit earned him international debut for Australia during the recently concluded World Cup campaign in Japan where he featured in three games and went on to score a try that came in his first game against Uruguay.

Reds had a tough start to the season after losing all the three games and will host Sunwolves next at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.
