Northampton Saints 49-41 Castres, cinch Stadium @ Franklin's Gardens

Northampton Saints secured their place in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-finals for the third straight season after a thrilling 49-41 victory over Castres Olympique at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens.

In a match packed with tries, momentum swings and repeated shifts in control, Saints eventually came through with enough attacking quality and composure to hold off a determined Castres side.

The visitors made the stronger start and put Saints under early pressure, but Northampton took charge when Castres’ discipline began to unravel. Even then, the French side refused to go away, keeping the contest alive until the closing minutes.

Castres Start Fast Before Saints Respond

Castres opened the scoring just before the 10-minute mark when scrum-half Jeremy Fernandez worked from the base of a scrum and chipped in behind for Christian Ambadiang to finish in the corner.

The visitors struck again only a few minutes later. Launching a counterattack, Castres found space out wide and moved the ball through several hands before Theo Chabouni dove over for their second try.

Saints thought they had hit back when James Ramm finished in the corner, but the try was ruled out after a review showed his foot had gone into touch.

Northampton soon got themselves on the board. Josh Kemeny broke the line and Archie McParland was then brought down illegally, which resulted in a penalty try and a yellow card for Ambadiang.

Castres’ discipline problems deepened when Guillaume Ducat was sent to the sin-bin for a dangerous clear-out on Henry Pollock. Saints used the two-man advantage well and struck again through Danilo Fischetti, closing the gap before halftime.

Saints Surge Ahead After The Break

Northampton came out strongly in the second half and took the lead for the first time when Kemeny finished off a flowing kick-return move involving George Furbank and McParland.

Saints then extended their advantage with Tommy Freeman finishing in the corner after a driving maul created the platform.

But the game quickly turned again. Tyler Ardron intercepted a pass to score for Castres, and Vuate Karawalevu soon added another after hitting a hard line from a scrum move, cutting the deficit back to just one point.

Furbank And McParland Keep Saints In Front

Saints responded well to that pressure. George Furbank scored after running a clever line from a scrum move, restoring some breathing room for the home side.

Archie McParland then added another try after sharp interplay in midfield as Northampton once again stretched the lead to 42-27.

Castres still refused to back down. After a break down the wing got them into the red zone, Vilimoni Botitu finished from close range to keep the visitors in the contest.

Saints Close Out A Wild Contest

Castres were shown a third yellow card when Veresa Ramototabua was sent to the bin for a high shot on McParland, and Saints capitalised immediately with Fraser Dingwall scoring in the corner.

Ambadiang grabbed his second try late on for Castres, but Northampton had already built enough of a cushion to survive the final push.

It was a chaotic and highly entertaining contest, but Saints did enough to secure a 49-41 victory and continue their Champions Cup run.
