Waratahs forward Miles Amatosero has been handed a four-match suspension following a serious training-ground incident that occurred earlier this month, casting a shadow over the New South Wales side’s preparations for the new Super Rugby season.
The lock was sanctioned after striking teammate Angus Scott-Young during a Waratahs training session.
The incident escalated quickly, with Amatosero reportedly throwing multiple punches before other players intervened. Scott-Young sustained facial injuries that required stitches and resulted in a fractured eye socket.
Scott-Young, who joined the Waratahs in November after leaving Northampton Saints, had only recently linked up with the squad following his move from the Reds and time overseas. The altercation prompted a formal review by Rugby Australia and the Waratahs.
In a statement, the club confirmed Amatosero’s suspension, noting that the ban can be reduced from four matches to two if the player successfully completes counselling and education programmes.
The Waratahs described the incident as unacceptable and said appropriate disciplinary processes had been followed.
Amatosero, who previously spent three seasons with French club Clermont, will miss at least the Waratahs’ upcoming pre-season trial matches against the Reds and the Brumbies.
His availability for the opening rounds of Super Rugby, which begins on February 13, will depend on the completion of the required programmes and the final outcome of the suspension review.
