Springbok fly-half Manie Libbok has opened up about the efforts he’s made to address a critical weakness in his game—his goal-kicking consistency.

Having faced criticism on missed shots at goal during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and other high-stakes matches, Libbok says he has since gone back to the basics to refine and strengthen this part of his skill set.

Renowned for his electric attacking flair, two-footed kicking ability, and exceptional distribution, the 27-year-old is often praised for being one of the most naturally talented fly-halves in world rugby.

But it’s his goal-kicking that has occasionally overshadowed his all-round brilliance. Missed conversions and penalties at crucial moments had previously prompted the Springbok coaching staff to share or shift kicking duties during key matches.

“It’s one area of my game I’ve worked really hard on to get right in the past few months,” Libbok told reporters on Wednesday.

“It is a continuous process working on it. I had a really good week this week kicking to poles and I hope I can build on that.”

Libbok’s recent five-from-five goal-kicking display against the Barbarians marked a turning point. It was not just an impressive statistic but a sign of confidence restored and progress made.

“I’m just happy I got it right against the Barbarians,” he added. “My focus now is just to improve on that performance and do my best to get it right going into this Test as well.”

South Africa will be taking on Italy next on 12th July.
