England hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie has issued a public apology following his error in the Six Nations defeat to Scotland in the opening round at Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday.

Cowan-Dickie slapped a crossfield kick from Finn Russell forward into touch which prevent Darcy Graham an opportunity to score a possible try in the 65th minute following which the 28-year-old was set to the sin-bin.

To make things worse for the red rose team, the referee had awarded a penalty try for the Dark Blues as they went on to level the scores before Russell landed the decisive penalty kick in the 72nd minute to complete a 20-17 win for Gregor Townsend's men as they retained the Calcutta Cup.

“Just want to apologise to all you supporters for today. I let myself and you guys down,” he wrote on social media.

“Every time I play for my country I want nothing more than to make you guys proud. Thanks for all the support. Looking forward to bouncing back next week!”

Speaking after the game, England coach Eddie Jones insisted that it would be unfair to single out Cowan-Dickie for his side's defeat.

“Luke is disappointed, that happens in the moment. He played exceptionally well and he is very disappointed, but all the boys are supporting him,” said Jones in the post match conference.

“We have only got ourselves to blame. We are massively disappointed that we lost and Scotland deserved to win.

“We dominated a lot of the game but didn't get the points out of the domination.”
