World Cup winning All Blacks flanker is likely to be omitted from the sevens squad that will take part in the Rio Olympics in August.

The 32-year-old has been the most capped player for his Super Rugby franchise Chiefs and has also managed to clinch two championships captaining the side.

Messam, who was a part of the 31-man squad that won the World Cup in 2015 has been struggling to replicate the same form in the sevens game despite dedicating his time to the format in 2016.

According to TVNZ, Messam’s place in the squad might go to former New Zealand U20 international Teddy Stanaway.

The 12-man squad which is expected to be announced on Sunday is likely to feature Tim Mikkelson, Kurt Baker and Sonny Bill Williams.

New Zealand are placed in the same group as Great Britain, Kenya, Japan.
