Wales international Ian Evans has announced his decision to retire from professional rugby after failing to recover from a knee injury.

The 32-year-old joined Bristol after spending almost 10 years with the Pro 12 club Ospreys and making over 100 appearances. Evans made his debut for Wales in 2006 and has featured in 33 Tests with his last appearance coming in June 2014.

A strong performance in Wales' 2013 Six Nations Championship victory earned him a place in the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia in 2013 and was also part of the Grand Slam winning teams in 2008 and 2012.

"I am deeply saddened to end my professional career now," Evans told Bristol's official website.

"However, the knee injury I suffered while playing for Bristol prevents me from achieving full fitness and hinders my capability to perform.

"While I am sad that my playing career has come to an end, I'm looking forward to the next chapter and exploring new opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to have had an incredible career.

"I am honoured to have had the opportunity to represent my country, winning successive Six Nations titles. I am grateful to the Ospreys and Bristol - two fantastic clubs where I have met great people and hold fond memories."

Interim Bristol head coach Mark Tainton had high praises for Evans and wished him good luck on his future.

"We thank Ian and wish him the best of luck for the future.

"Ian helped Bristol to promotion in 2016, and has been an excellent ambassador for the club.

"He has suffered a challenging period here with his knee injuries, and ultimately, Ian hasn't been able to play a regular run of games."
