Exeter Chiefs have confirmed the signing of promising Australian hooker Julian Heaven from the Waratahs ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 23-year-old front rower will bring a wealth of diverse rugby experience with him as he returns to the northern hemisphere, marking the next chapter in a steadily rising career.
Originally from Australia and a product of St Joseph’s College, Heaven’s path to professional rugby has been anything but conventional.
He began his career in the Waratahs Academy system but chose to broaden his horizons early by moving to France, where he joined the Lyon Academy and gained valuable exposure to the demands of European rugby in the Top 14.
After returning to Australia in 2022, he continued his development with the Eastern Suburbs club in the Shute Shield.
His breakthrough came in 2024 when injuries in the Waratahs squad presented an unexpected opportunity. Rising to the challenge, Heaven made 10 appearances and scored two tries for the Super Rugby franchise, impressing with his tenacity and drive.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Exeter Chiefs,” Heaven said.
“It is a historic club in a city that loves its rugby. The team’s culture and playing style really stood out to me and I believe I can contribute to its success.
"After speaking with the coaches and seeing the passion of the fans, it felt like the perfect place to take the next step in my career. I can’t wait to get started and give everything for the club.”
Exeter’s Director of Rugby Rob Baxter praised the signing and the attitude that Heaven brings to the squad.
“Julian is a really exciting young hooker with a very interesting story around how hard he’s worked to get the opportunities he’s had.
"He’s travelled to France to try to get experience there and he’s ended up fighting his way into getting some decent recognition with the Waratahs.
"In the last couple of weeks, he’s come off the bench or started in some very important games for the Waratahs. He’s a young guy who we think is an exciting character and player.
"He’s someone who will definitely add to what we’re trying to achieve here. We’re really excited to have him coming over here as a young EQP guy coming in with stacks to prove."
