Scorecard

Jono Lance starred with 20 points as Queensland Reds ended their losing streak with a 35-23 victory over Melbourne Rebels at Suncorp Stadium in their Super Rugby encounter on Friday.

The win has given a chance to Sharks to go past Rebels in the battle for the play-off while Reds will be relieved to get their fifth victory on the board.

The first 14 minutes of the game saw Reece Hodge and Lance trade penalties and the scores remained levelled 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. Repeated infringements from Rebels saw referee Paul Williams lose his patience and a penalty try was awarded for Reds in the 25th minute.

However, the visitors found momentum as a brilliant teamwork from Jack Maddocks and Michael Ruru sent Angus Cottrell over the line and four minutes later Maddocks also scored a try. Hodge slotted conversions on both the tries as Rebels had an 8-17 lead by the half hour mark.

However, Reds seized the momentum as the half time was approaching with lock Izack Rodda crossing over to make it 15-17 and a sin-bin to prop Tetera Faulkner saw the home side score another try this time winger Filipo Daugunu finding his name in the scoring sheet. The teams headed into the break with Reds having a 22-17 lead.

Back to back penalties from Hodge got Rebels into the lead but despite a sin-bin to Duncan Paia'Aua for an offside, Reds dominated the final 10 minutes with Lance scoring a converted try with penalties on either side to complete a 37-23 win.
