The Bulls have confirmed Johan Ackermann as their new head coach, taking over from Jake White ahead of the 2025/26 United Rugby Championship season.
The 55-year-old South African brings extensive coaching experience from both domestic and international rugby.
Ackermann played 13 Tests for the Springboks and earned multiple Coach of the Year awards during his tenure with the Lions from 2013 to 2016.
He later was in charge of Gloucester in England and coached Japan’s Red Hurricanes and Urayasu D-Rocks. His return to South Africa marks the next stage in his career and a significant shift for the Pretoria-based team.
The decision follows reports of internal unrest, including dissatisfaction among senior players and coaching staff with White’s methods. Several rugby squad members reportedly met with Bulls management to express concerns, which led to calls for leadership change.
Assistant coaches Chris Rossouw and Andries Bekker will continue in their roles, working alongside Ackermann to develop both strategy and team culture.
Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Ackermann said he is “excited to return home and honoured to lead the Bulls. I look forward to working with the players and staff to achieve long-term success.”
He is expected to formally begin his role this week, preparing the team for pre-season and the upcoming URC campaign.
