Bath Rugby have announced the signing of scrum-half Joe Simpson on a three-month loan deal from Premiership rivals Gloucester.

The 33-year-old will provide cover for Ben Spencer, who is undergoing rehabilitation after sustaining hamstring injury during the season opener against Sale Sharks.

A product of Wasps Academy, Simpson made his senior debut with the club in 2006 and had racked up over 250 appearances for them. He made a switch to the Cherry and Whites in 2019 and went on play 29 matches for them in which he scored 11 tries before heading for a loan stint with Saracens.

A member of GB Sevens squad in the 2016 Olympics, Simpson also made a solitary Test appearance for England that came in 2011 against Georgia in Dunedin.

“We are delighted to bring in a player of Joe’s Premiership quality to our group,” said director of rugby Stuart Hooper to the club's official website.

“He adds great experience to our squad and will enhance the competition for the nine shirt alongside Ollie, Max and Tom whilst Ben is injured.”

Bath currently are languishing at the bottom of the table after losing all their three matches and will face Saracens next at The Recreation Ground on 17th October.
