Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith is being strongly linked with a return to South Africa and a move to the Bulls after ending his eight-year spell with Shizuoka Blue Revs.

Bulls talks reportedly at advanced stage

The 33-year-old’s departure from the Japanese club was confirmed on Tuesday after the club and Smith mutually agreed to end his contract.

Smith has been linked with the Pretoria-based Bulls, with reports suggesting negotiations are at an advanced stage. However, the Bulls have not yet formally announced his signing.

Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann confirmed last month that discussions involving Smith were taking place, while fellow Springbok Malcolm Marx was also among the names being considered.

Smith leaves Blue Revs after eight seasons

Smith joined Yamaha Júbilo, later renamed Shizuoka Blue Revs, in 2018 and went on to become one of the leading players in Japanese domestic rugby.

He made close to 80 official club appearances across league and cup competitions during his eight seasons in Japan.

Smith was selected in the Top League Best XV twice and earned three further Best XV selections after the competition became Japan Rugby League One.

He was also named League One Player of the Season for the 2022/23 campaign.

Smith has earned 63 Test caps for South Africa and was part of the Springbok squads that won the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups.
