The Gallagher Chiefs have strengthened their coaching group with the appointment of former All Black Jarrad Hoeata as an assistant coach, expanding the club’s commitment to developing homegrown coaching talent.
Hoeata, a former Chiefs player, brings strong technical expertise from his experience coaching New Zealand Under-20s and serving as an assistant coach for Taranaki across six seasons.
His work with the Yarrows Taranaki Bulls included helping shape the forward pack that contributed to their 2023 NPC title. Born and raised in Chiefs Country, Hoeata said returning to the franchise was “really special” after considering offers from other teams.
“I feel really fortunate to be back at the Chiefs. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to come back to, so having this opportuntiy feels really special” said Hoeata.
“It’s been great reconnecting with Jono and some of the players I’ve coached and played with over the years as well as building on the existing relationships – particular with the Taranaki boys. It’s making my job a lot more seamless coming in”
Chiefs head coach Jono Gibbes, who previously worked with Hoeata in the NZU20 setup, welcomed the appointment, praising his technical proficiency, particularly around the lineout, and his passion for the craft.
“[He] is a very technically proficient, confident coach, a great technician around the lineout and really passionate about his craft. The expertise and passion for what he does will create great learning conditions for our players”.
