Gloucester Rugby has confirmed the signing of South African back row forward James Venter ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The 28-year-old brings a wealth of experience and physicality to the Cherry & Whites, having competed at the highest levels of Super Rugby, the United Rugby Championship (URC), and European competitions.
Venter developed through the ranks at the Lions in Johannesburg, featuring in both the Golden Lions XV in the Rugby Challenge and the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup.
He made his Super Rugby debut for the Lions provincial side before moving to the Sharks in 2020, where he further established himself as a key player.
Over the past five seasons, Venter has amassed 32 Currie Cup appearances and made 46 appearances across Super Rugby, the URC, and European competitions. One of his standout moments came during the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour, where he scored a try for the Sharks in a hard-fought contest.
Venter played a pivotal role in the Sharks’ success in recent years, helping them reach the quarter-finals of the URC in 2021/22 and 2022/23, as well as the Champions Cup quarter-finals in 2022/23. Last season, he tasted European success, lifting the Challenge Cup trophy after defeating Gloucester in the final at Tottenham.
Director of Rugby George Skivington expressed his excitement about the acquisition of Venter, emphasizing the qualities he will bring to the squad.
"James will be a really welcome addition here at Kingsholm, and we’re delighted to get the deal over the line.
"He’ll bring energy and power in attack and defence, and I know they’re things that will excite the crowd and get them off their seats. He’s another quality addition to our squad for next season and we’re really excited for his arrival."
Venter himself is looking forward to the move, highlighting his admiration for Gloucester’s vision and passionate fan base.
"I’m pleased to have signed for Gloucester Rugby next season. I was really impressed by the vision the club has for the future, and I’m looking forward to playing my part in that.
"I've heard amazing things about Kingsholm and the incredible support from the fans. That played a huge role in my decision to move to England. I can't wait to experience it all firsthand!"
