Ireland will miss the services of lock Tadhg Beirne for the remainder of the Six Nations tournament following an ankle injury.

Beirne sustained the blow during Ireland's recently concluded Six Nations game against France played at Aviva Stadium last weekend.

The news was confirmed by a post from the Irish Rugby Football Union's official twitter handle.

“Tadhg Beirne will undergo surgery today on the ankle injury he sustained in Saturday’s win over France,” read the tweet.

“Unfortunately, Tadhg will be ruled out for up to 12 weeks.”

Head coach Andy Farrell is likely to turn to Ulster's Iain Henderson, who replaced Beirne in the game against France for the upcoming third round clash against Italy on 25th February at Stadio Olimpico.

Ireland currently are at the top of the Six Nations table with two wins from as many games.
