Scarlets have confirmed that versatile back Ioan Nicholas has signed a new contract, extending his long-standing association with the club ahead of the 2025–26 season.

Once the youngest player to represent Scarlets, debuting at just 17 against Jersey Reds, Nicholas has since matured into a senior leader in Dwayne Peel’s squad.

Now 27, the Carmarthenshire native has made 110 appearances for the region and continues to be a reliable presence across the backline, capable of playing at full-back, centre, or wing.

Nicholas reached the 100-cap milestone last season in a European fixture against Aviron Bayonnais and was later voted the Supporters’ Player of the Season for 2023–24. He followed that up with 16 appearances and four tries during the campaign.

Speaking during pre-season training, Nicholas said, “It’s nice to be back in after a break. It’s been tough, especially with the heat early on.

"There are a lot of new faces around which has brought fresh energy. Everyone’s excited for the season ahead.”

Reflecting on his role in the squad, he added, “I still feel like one of the younger boys, but I’ve been here nearly 10 years now.

"I’m still enjoying my rugby and looking forward to building on last season.

"We’ve got big games coming up—Munster to start and then Champions Cup clashes with Bristol and Bordeaux. It’s an exciting time for the squad and the fans.”

Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel praised Nicholas’ leadership and consistency.

“Iowz is the heartbeat of the squad. He contributes massively both on and off the field.

"He’s a dependable performer across multiple positions, and his commitment to the club is unquestionable. It’s fantastic to have another home-grown talent re-sign.”

Nicholas joins a growing list of players extending their contracts with the Scarlets, including Tomi Lewis, Joe Roberts, Sam Costelow, and Taine Plumtree.

The club has also strengthened its squad with key signings such as Jake Ball, Joe Hawkins, Dane Blacker, Tristan Davies, and Ioan Jones in preparation for the upcoming season.
