Highlanders have announced that New Zealand fly-half Josh Ioane has been released from his final year of contract ahead of the 2022 season.

The news was confirmed by the club's official social media handle.

"The Highlanders have today released Josh Ioane from the last year of his contract to enable him to explore other opportunities," read the post.

"As a club, we wish him well in the future!"

The 26-year-old has been part of Highlanders since 2018 and was a product of Otago Academy. He also had represented Samoa Under 20 side, Maori All Blacks and South Island.

Ioane also featured in a solitary Test for the All Blacks that came in 2019 against Tonga.

Having already represented Moana Pasifika in their inaugural match last year, it is likely that Ioane will head to the new franchise as they make their debut in the 2022 season of Super Rugby Pacific.
