Three of Ireland’s most decorated rugby players, Cian Healy, Peter O'Mahony, and Conor Murray, have announced they will retire from international rugby at the conclusion of the Six Nations.
The trio, who have been instrumental in Ireland’s success over the past 15 years, are aiming to end their careers with a historic third consecutive Six Nations title.
Ireland has maintained an undefeated record in this year’s competition, with victories in their first three matches.
Their remaining fixtures include a crucial showdown against France on March 9 before concluding their campaign in Rome against Italy on March 15.
While O'Mahony remains a regular starter, both Healy and Murray have provided invaluable experience off the bench, backing up the first-choice selections of Andrew Porter and Jamison Gibson-Park.
The trio has been a cornerstone of Ireland’s dominance, contributing significantly under the leadership of Joe Schmidt and Andy Farrell. Their combined efforts have helped Ireland win five Six Nations titles, including two Grand Slams since 2014.
David Humphreys, Performance Director at the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), paid tribute to their contributions.
"It goes without saying that Peter, Cian and Conor are legends of not just Irish rugby, but Irish sport, and have each made a significant contribution to the success of Irish rugby for more than 15 years."
While their international careers may be coming to a close, Humphreys assured that their impact will be honored appropriately in the near future.
Ireland's interim head coach Simon Easterby, who has worked closely with the trio over the years, spoke highly of their dedication and influence.
"They have each played a huge role in the success of Irish rugby over the course of their careers and they continue to inspire their teammates around them."
In a heartfelt video shared on Irish Rugby’s social media, the retiring players reflected on their journeys.
"It's been an unbelievable journey and I consider myself very lucky, but the job is not done yet," said O'Mahony, signaling his determination to end on a high note.
Healy acknowledged the shared experiences with his fellow retirees, while Murray expressed gratitude to Irish fans, stating their support had "not gone unnoticed."
Their impact on Irish rugby extends beyond Six Nations triumphs. The trio played a key role in Ireland's historic series win over New Zealand in 2022, further cementing their place among the sport’s greats.
Former Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris also praised their achievements, recognizing their role in turning Ireland into a rugby powerhouse.
