Ireland’s interim head coach Simon Easterby can breathe a sigh of relief as winger Mack Hansen’s suspension will not impact his availability for the Six Nations opener against England on 1st February at the Aviva Stadium.
Hansen, who received a six-week suspension for post-match comments regarding officiating after Connacht’s 20-12 loss to Leinster on 20th December, will remain eligible for Ireland’s championship campaign.
The ban applies to Connacht’s European Challenge Cup matches against Lyon and Cardiff, as well as their United Rugby Championship clash with Glasgow later this month.
The disciplinary panel opted to suspend three weeks of Hansen’s ban until the end of the season, ensuring his availability for international duty. Connacht Rugby, however, were fined €10,000 in connection with the incident.
Hansen acknowledged his mistake, releasing a statement apologizing for his remarks: “People know I always wear my heart on my sleeve.
"However, after the Leinster game, on this occasion, I let my emotions get the better of me.
"Upon reflection, my comments to the media were ill-advised and fell far short of the standards I expect of myself, and what the sport expects of its players.”
The Connacht star pledged to focus on his performance both on and off the pitch moving forward, vowing to represent his province and Ireland with renewed dedication.
Since making his debut in 2022, Hansen has become a crucial part of the Irish squad. His record of 13 tries in 22 Test appearances underlines his significance to the team, especially in light of injuries to other players, including Jacob Stockdale.
