Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend was pleased with his side's 34-0 win over Samoa in the recently concluded World Cup encounter at Kobe Misaki Stadium.

Sean Maitland and Greig Laidlaw scored first half tries for the Dark Blues while two more penalty tries in the second half ensured Townsend's men claimed a much-needed bonus point victory to keep their hope of quarter-finals alive following a 27-3 defeat to Ireland.

"That was a true reflection of who we are and what we are capable of and what playing for Scotland means to the players," said Townsend.

"That was a tough challenge to face, knowing that if we underperformed we were out of the World Cup. To see the effort and togetherness was excellent.

"Last week we missed the beginning of the game and I take responsibility for not preparing the team well enough to start well against Ireland.

"But that didn't make us a bad team. Tonight was great to see them get rewards for their effort."

The win has lifted Scotland to the third position in Pool A that has Japan holding the top place with nine points while Ireland are at second with six points.

Scotland will be facing Russia and host Japan in the final two games of the opening round on 9th and 13th October respectively.
