Gloucester on Friday have confirmed the appointment of Scotland skipper Greig Laidlaw as the captain for the upcoming season.

The 30-year-old joined Gloucester from Edinburgh in 2014 and has captained the side occasionally during the previous seasons. He will now officially take over the captaincy from Billy Twelvetrees.

Laidlaw has made 42 appearances for the English Premiership side and has scored 425 points overall. The scrum-half has also captained Scotland in 53 games previously and has won 21 out of it and has also the experience of captaining Edinburgh and Scotland A teams in the past.

Stating it is a "privilege and honour" to lead Gloucester, Laidlaw is hopeful of receiving support from Twelvetree and other senior players as they look to put on a better performance in the upcoming season.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be named captain of such a great club. It's a real privilege and honour to be follow in the footsteps of so many great players at Gloucester, a club with so much heritage and history.

"Billy did a terrific job as captain and I'm delighted that he's still around, because having so many experienced senior pros in the squad makes the role a lot easier.

"The hard work for next season has already begun, and we're all hoping that it will be one to remember for everyone at Gloucester Rugby."
