Newport Gwent Dragons have acquired the services of former Wales fly-half Gavin Henson ahead of the next season.

Henson, who has signed a two-year deal with Dragons, will make a switch from Aviva Premiership club Bristol, who he joined in 2015.

Having started his professional rugby career in 2000, the 35-year-old has experience in playing for Llanelli, Swansea, Ospreys, Saracens, Toulon, Cardiff Blues, London Welsh and Bath before joining Bristol.

"I have really enjoyed my time at Bristol, but when the opportunity came along to join the Dragons and return to Wales, I couldn't say no," Henson told Dragons' official website.

"I still have loads to offer, and I know what Kingsley (Jones, the Dragons head coach) wants from me.

"I am especially looking forward to pitting myself against the current Welsh players, and hopefully becoming a catalyst and mentor for the tremendous talent that is in the Dragons squad."

Henson, who provides a lot of flexibility to the squad having played at fly-half, centre and full-back has played 33 Tests for Wales and a solitary appearance for British and Irish Lions between 2001 and 2011.

Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones is confident that Henson's experience will benefit the club.

"This is a hugely important signing, and exactly what we need to complement our existing squad.

"I am delighted that Gavin sees the potential within the region and that he is excited about the prospect of assisting this group of backs with their development.

"Having worked with Gavin previously, I am fully aware that he will bring critical experience on the field and inside the training environment."
