Former South Africa coach Gary Gold has joined Eddie Jones’ coaching staff for Japan’s upcoming Pacific Nations Cup campaign.

Gold, 58, brings a wealth of international and club-level experience to the role. His last international position was as head coach of the United States from 2018 to 2022.

Gold began his Test coaching career in 2004 as South Africa’s defensive consultant before serving as assistant coach to Peter de Villiers from 2008 to 2011. During this time, the Springboks won the Tri Nations and the British and Irish Lions Series.

At club level, he has coached some of South Africa’s top provincial teams, including the Sharks, Bulls, and Western Province. His overseas experience includes stints with Premiership clubs London Irish, Newcastle Falcons, Bath, and Worcester Warriors, as well as a spell in Japan with the Kobe Steelers.

Eddie Jones has been reshaping his backroom staff as Japan prepares for the Pacific Nations Cup, with a clear focus on blending international expertise and local talent to strengthen the Brave Blossoms.
