France 33-8 Italy, Lille
France overcame a determined Italian side to secure a 33-8 victory in Lille, maintaining control of their campaign despite facing their sternest test so far.
Fast French start sets tone
Les Bleus struck inside four minutes when a slick attacking move ended with Louis Bielle-Biarrey finishing in the corner after a chip ahead from Antoine Dupont. Thomas Ramos converted to give the hosts an early lead.
France continued to press and extended their advantage through Emmanuel Meafou, who powered over for his first international try to make it 12-0.
Italy, however, refused to retreat. Manuel Zuliani sparked a dangerous break and Emilien Gailleton missed a tackle in another promising move, but on both occasions the Azzurri fell short of the line.
France struck again when Gailleton made a long break before offloading to Ramos, who crossed to push the score to 19-0. Italy responded quickly as Ange Capuozzo capitalised on a loose ball to score, and Paolo Garbisi added a penalty before halftime to narrow the gap to 19-8.
Discipline and depth prove decisive
The second half was more closely contested. Italy slowed the tempo and defended strongly, keeping France within reach. The hosts struggled for fluency until Louis Lynagh was shown a yellow card for cynical play.
With the numerical advantage, France regained momentum. Gaël Dréan marked his international debut with a try after finishing a cross-field kick from Ramos to secure the bonus point.
Gailleton added a late score to complete the 33-8 result, ensuring France maintained control in the standings despite a spirited Italian challenge.
