Rugby Australia has confirmed the appointment of former Wallabies flanker Phil Waugh as the new chief executive.

RA chairman Hamish McLennan revealed the news on Tuesday with Waugh set to take over from Andy Marinos, who announced his resignation last month.

The 43-year-old has worked as a non-executive director on the RA board since 2018 and was part of organisation's rugby committee.

Having played 79 Tests for the Wallabies between 2000 and 2009, Waugh also featured in two Rugby World Cups in 2003 and 2007 while also captaining them in 2006.

"I've certainly got high aspiration and belief that we can be the best in the world across all formats and that's certainly what we'll be aiming for," he said.

"We're just haven't put consistent performances out on the field. We haven't won enough trophies and that's really important."

Currently ranked at number seven, Waugh is confident that the men's team can climb into the top three rankings under Eddie Jones while the women's team has the ability to become the top most team.
