The Fijian Drua delivered a stunning performance to defeat the Chiefs 28-24 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, ending the visitors' unbeaten run in Super Rugby Pacific 2025.
The match showcased the Drua’s resilience, home-ground dominance, and ability to capitalize on crucial moments, marking one of their most significant victories in the competition.
The Chiefs started the match strongly, using their forward pack to assert dominance. Samisoni Taukei'aho was the first to strike, finishing off a rolling maul in the 8th minute to give the visitors an early advantage.
Their momentum continued, and in the 15th minute, lock Jimmy Tupou powered over after multiple phases near the try line, extending the Chiefs' lead to 12-0.
Despite the early setback, the Drua displayed strong defensive resilience. Their efforts were rewarded when Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula slotted two penalty goals in the 22nd and 35th minutes, keeping the hosts in touch at 12-6 heading into halftime.
Emerging from the break with renewed energy, the Drua immediately put pressure on the Chiefs. In the 44th minute, captain Meli Derenalagi stormed through the defense to score the Drua’s first try, with Armstrong-Ravula converting to push the hosts ahead 13-12.
The Chiefs responded in the 50th minute, as Anton Lienert-Brown finished off a sharp backline move, reclaiming the lead at 17-13.
However, the Drua refused to back down. Vuate Karawalevu showcased his attacking prowess in the 57th minute, weaving through multiple defenders to score a spectacular try. The successful conversion restored the Drua’s lead at 20-17.
Minutes later, a moment of individual brilliance from Ponipate Loganimasi electrified the home crowd. In the 65th minute, the winger burst from deep within his half, beating several Chiefs defenders before kicking ahead and gathering to score. The conversion extended the Drua’s advantage to 27-17.
The Chiefs, known for their ability to fight back, launched relentless attacks in the closing stages. Their perseverance paid off in the 75th minute, when Tupou Vaa’i muscled over to close the gap to 28-24.
With just minutes remaining, the Chiefs pressed for a game-winning try. However, the Drua’s defensive line held firm, forcing a crucial turnover to secure their famous victory.
