Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman is preparing for his first-ever Six Nations start, aiming to make a significant impact as the national team kicks off their campaign against Italy this Saturday.
The 24-year-old has emerged as Scotland's first-choice hooker following the departure of George Turner, who left Glasgow to join Kobe Steelers in Japan last summer.
Ashman has taken the No.2 jersey with confidence, stepping up after serving as Turner’s understudy during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and last year’s Six Nations. His elevated role was solidified during Scotland's summer tour of the Americas and the autumn series, where he started in three of the four November Tests.
Now with 22 caps under his belt since his debut in November 2021, Ashman is relishing the opportunity to start a Six Nations match for the first time in his career.
While competition remains fierce, Ashman is likely to be selected ahead of his Edinburgh teammates Paddy Harrison and Dave Cherry for the opening match at Murrayfield. The young forward expressed his excitement about his growing responsibilities, stating:
“I can’t remember being this excited to play in a tournament for a long time,” said Ashman.
“It doesn’t get much bigger than Six Nations.
“Growing up, it was probably one of the most exciting competitions in the world. I’m hugely excited and looking forward to it.
“It was great getting some minutes in November, I loved it.
“Every time I get an opportunity to train for Scotland and to play for Scotland, I don’t take it for granted.
“I know how big it is for me personally and my family.
“Whatever I can do to play as many games and minutes as possible, I’m going to do and be more professional than I ever have.
“It would be great to get out there and play those games, especially at Murrayfield.”
Scotland will kick-start their 2025 Six Nations campaign with a clash against Italy on 1st February at Murrayfield Stadium.
