Exeter Chiefs back-rower Ethan Roots has become the first member of the squad to agree a contract extension this season.

Roots joined the Chiefs ahead of the 2023/24 season and has quickly established himself as one of the side’s most influential performers.

Since his arrival from the Ospreys, Roots has featured heavily across domestic and European competitions. During his first season at the club, he played more than 20 matches and scored in a Champions Cup quarter-final against Toulouse, underlining his impact on the biggest stage.

Earlier this season, his performances in the PREM, where he consistently ranked highly for tackles, carries and counter-rucks, earned him a call-up to the England A squad. He captained the side in a fixture against an All Blacks XV, adding to his growing reputation.

The back-rower has since progressed to full England honours and has now passed the 50-appearance mark for Exeter, becoming a key part of the club’s forward pack.

Roots said Exeter has played a major role in both his personal and professional growth and believes the club is moving in the right direction.

“I have had both the toughest and best seasons of my career here. The area, the Chiefs lads, the fans and the club all have played a special role in my development as a person and as a player," he told the club's official website.

“I can feel something building at the moment and I’m excited to extend my stay and help return Chiefs back to their former glory.”
