Dragons RFC have confirmed that promising Wales Under-20 internationals Evan Minto and Nick Thomas have both signed new Senior Academy contracts with the club.

Back-row forward Evan Minto, 19, has had a standout season, not only making his senior debut in the EPCR Challenge Cup win over Newcastle Falcons but also starting all five games for Wales in the recent U20 Six Nations.

Minto’s rugby journey began at Pontypool United, where he featured in the Welsh Youth Cup final, before progressing through the Dragons’ age-grade system.

He further showcased his growing influence with a crucial try for Hartpury Rugby, helping secure a place in the BUCS Super Rugby Milk Championship Finals at Rodney Parade.

“I was honoured to have the opportunity to make my debut for the club. I’ve been watching the Dragons play for years and to have the chance to pull that jersey on was a huge moment in my life.

"I have stayed with the club as I feel the amount I’m learning off the players and coaches is huge, and there is nowhere else I would rather be.

"There is lots of experience in the squad now so being able to stay with them and learn as much as possible is massive for me.”

Second-row Nick Thomas, also 19, began his rugby journey at St Peter’s RFC and later featured for Newport RFC in Super Rygbi Cymru.

He too made his senior debut in the same European fixture and earned a call-up to Wales U20, appearing against France before injury curtailed his campaign.

“Making my senior debut this season was something special and wasn’t expected - it was a dream come true.

"Re-signing for Dragons RFC was an easy decision for me, the club has played a huge role in my development, and I feel it's the best place for me to continue growing as a player.

"The environment, coaching staff, and opportunities to compete at a high level make it the ideal place to push myself.

"I’m eager to build on my progress, put in strong performances, and contribute to team success.”

Dragons’ Development Vision

Academy Manager Lewis Roberts praised both players' growth and potential, expressing confidence in their continued impact. Head Coach Filo Tiatia echoed the sentiment, underlining the club's pride in nurturing homegrown talent.

“It is always special to see homegrown players come through our system and make senior debuts.

"Both Evan and Nick earned opportunities through their hard work and dedication. We now look forward to them continuing to develop in our pathway.”
