The Chiefs delivered a powerful statement in the final round of the Super Rugby Pacific regular season by dismantling the Highlanders 41–24 at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

This win confirms their place at the summit of the standings and guarantees home advantage throughout the playoffs. For the Highlanders, the loss closed out a disappointing season, cementing their place at the bottom of the table.

The match began at a blistering pace, with the Chiefs asserting their superiority from the outset. Samipeni Finau powered over in just the fifth minute to open the scoring.

Just moments later, Tupou Vaa’i began what would become a landmark personal performance, scoring his first try in the 10th minute after a Highlanders error. He repeated the feat only three minutes later, giving the Chiefs a 19–0 lead with less than 15 minutes gone.

The Highlanders managed to claw their way back with a try from Timoci Tavatavanawai, showing glimpses of resistance. However, the Chiefs maintained their stranglehold on possession and territory, adding another try before the break. Despite a penalty and a second try for the hosts, the Chiefs went into halftime leading 26–10.

The second half saw a more determined Highlanders outfit, with Cam Millar steadying the side with a penalty and a conversion following a well-constructed try.

However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished. The Chiefs continued their relentless offensive with Etene Nanai-Seturo slicing through for a try that reestablished a firm cushion.

As the match wore on, Tupou Vaa’i capped off a remarkable outing by completing his hat-trick in the final minutes. His third try, a result of both persistence and awareness, put the game firmly out of Highlanders’ reach. Damian McKenzie’s boot remained a constant threat throughout, converting accurately to push the scoreline to 41–24.

This win not only showcased the Chiefs’ attacking firepower and depth but also underlined their championship credentials. With home advantage in the playoffs secured, they now carry significant momentum into the knockout rounds.
