Leicester Tigers have confirmed that Michael Cheika will step down as head coach at the conclusion of the current season.

Cheika, who joined the club on a one-year deal, will not be extending his stay, despite his positive impact on the squad since arriving last summer.

Speaking on the announcement, Leicester Tigers CEO Andrea Pinchen expressed disappointment at the departure but acknowledged that the club had been transparent about Cheika’s short-term agreement.

"While disappointed, given the positive influence Michael has had since joining us in the summer, we were always aware of this being a one-year deal and we have been transparent with players, staff, and supporters on that point."

Pinchen emphasized that the club had hoped to retain Cheika beyond this season, but understood the circumstances preventing an extension.

With Cheika’s departure confirmed, Leicester Tigers have already begun their search for a suitable successor. Pinchen outlined that the recruitment process had been planned in advance, given the fixed-term nature of Cheika’s contract.

"Knowing it was a one-year contract, the club has been running a recruitment process to find a suitable Head Coach replacement."

While the club will not provide further updates on the selection process at this time, it has reassured supporters that an announcement will be made when appropriate.

Despite his impending departure, Cheika remains fully focused on helping the Tigers compete for silverware as the season progresses. Pinchen noted the coach’s determination to end on a high, with the team striving for success in the closing stages of the campaign.

"It goes without saying that Michael is fully committed to seeing out his time as Head Coach in a successful way, determined to add silverware to the trophy cabinet at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, and we are excited about what remains in this campaign."
