Bath start season with away win over Harlequins

Harlequins 17-33 Bath Rugby, Twickenham Stoop

Bath opened their Gallagher PREM season with a 33-17 win over Harlequins in front of a sold-out crowd at The Stoop.

Quins showed flashes of attacking quality and scored three tries, but Bath were sharper in key moments and punished the hosts’ errors. The visitors built a 28-10 lead by half-time and sealed the result with a late driving-maul try.

Bath Strike First At The Stoop

After a tense opening 10 minutes, Bath took the lead through their forward power. Dan du Preez forced his way over from close range, and Finn Russell converted to make it 7-0.

Harlequins responded quickly with a fine individual try from Will Porter. The scrum-half picked up loose lineout ball, spun through the defensive line and beat the cover to score. The conversion was missed, leaving Bath 7-5 ahead.

Bath restored their lead midway through the first half when Joe Cokanasiga hit a strong line and crossed for their second try.

Quins Hit Back Before Bath Pull Clear

Harlequins produced their best first-half move soon after. Oscar Beard gathered the ball and released Connor Slevin down the left. The fly-half then found Chandler Cunningham-South inside, and the back-rower ran in to reduce the gap to 14-10.

Quins had momentum and pushed for another score, but Bath struck with a major turning point. Santiago Carreras produced a brilliant individual try, lifting the ball into the air with his foot, gathering it and racing clear from long range.

Bath then added a fourth try before the break through Dan Frost, with Russell converting to make it 28-10 at half-time.

Delgado Gives Quins Hope

Harlequins needed an early response after the interval and found one five minutes into the second half. Cadan Murley’s break carried the hosts into Bath territory before Pedro Delgado burrowed over for his first Harlequins try. Slevin converted to cut the gap to 28-17.

The hosts continued to push, but handling errors and missed chances stopped them from putting Bath under sustained scoreboard pressure.

Richards Seals Bath Win

Harlequins had to manage a sin-bin period after replacement hooker Sam Riley was shown yellow for a high tackle.

Bath were kept quiet for much of the second half, but they finished the stronger side. Ewan Richards scored late from a driving maul to seal the bonus-point win.
