Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil have formally submitted a joint bid to host the 2035 Men’s Rugby World Cup, aiming to bring the tournament to South America for the first time.
South America submits 2035 Rugby World Cup bid
The four unions have provided World Rugby with the technical information required as part of the host selection process, completing the latest stage of their candidacy within the stipulated timeframe.
Argentina is leading the regional bid, with all four countries set to stage matches if the proposal is successful.
World Rugby will carry out site visits and feasibility assessments before identifying a preferred host in May 2027. The final appointment will be made by the World Rugby Council in November 2027.
Argentina proposes eight Rugby World Cup venues
The bid includes 11 stadiums across 10 cities, with eight proposed venues in Argentina.
Those include the Monumental and José Amalfitani stadiums in Buenos Aires, Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata, Mario Alberto Kempes in Córdoba, Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, Padre Martearena in Salta, Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza and Gigante de Arroyito in Rosario.
The remaining venues are the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Estadio Nacional in Santiago and Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.
Argentina targets first Rugby World Cup on continent
Argentina have reached the Men’s Rugby World Cup semi-finals three times, in 2007, 2015 and 2023, with their best finish coming in 2007 when they placed third. They are also the only nation to have reached a Men’s Rugby World Cup semi-final without ever having hosted a match at the tournament.
The 2027 tournament will be held in Australia before the United States becomes the first host from the Americas in 2031.
