Leicester Tigers have confirmed the signing of Argentina international Joaquín Diaz Bonilla ahead of the 2020/21 season.

The 31-year-old made his professional rugby debut with Argentinian club Hindu making 130 appearances for them and went on to make his Super Rugby debut for Jaguares in 2017 and was part of the squad that went on to play the final of the tournament in the 2019 edition.

He also had a brief stint for Racing 92 as a cover for Finn Russell and Ben Volavola during the 2019 World Cup before rejoining Jaguares. Bonilla will join the likes of fellow Argentina international Matías Moroni and South African back-rower Jasper Wiese in new additions for the squad ahead of the next season.

The 5ft 10in fly-half has played four Tests for Argentina that came in 2018 and 2019 and will make his debut in the English Premiership in the upcoming season for the Tigers.

“Joaquín is a very exciting addition for us and we are looking forward to welcoming him to Leicester ahead of next season’s campaign,” said Director of Rugby Geordan Murphy to the statement released by the club.

“He will add valuable depth to our squad and alongside George [Ford], Zack [Henry] and Johnny McPhillips, provide plenty of healthy competition in a key position, which is a positive thing for us as we continue on this journey.

“In our conversations with Joaquín, what has stood out is his positive character and energetic personality.

“We have been very open about wanting good people as much as good players, who are willing to work hard and live up to the standards we have set, and Joaquín is very excited to be a part of what we are building in Leicester.”
