Edinburgh will miss the services of their fly-half Jason Tovey after he was ruled out for eight weeks with a wrist injury.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury during training last week following which he underwent a scan that revealed a stress fracture. Tovey, who joined Cardiff Blues for the 2012/13 season has also represented Newport Gwent Dragons for seven years, spread across two different stints.

It was in May, Tovey signed a two-year deal with Edinburgh after initially joining the Scottish club on loan. A statement released by the club's official website confirmed the injury to Tovey.

"The Welsh playmaker sustained the injury in training last week, with a scan at Spire Murrayfield Hospital revealing a small fracture, " said the statement.

"However, at this stage it is thought that surgery will not be required.

"Tovey will remain in the care of the club's medical team for ongoing rehabilitation and assessment."

Meanwhile, Scotland international Duncan Weir is set to start at number 10 in the absence of Tovey. Weir joined Edinburgh in 2016 following a six-year stint with Glasgow Warriors.

After finishing ninth in the 2015/16 season of Pro12, Edinburgh will begin their upcoming season against Cardiff Blues at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on 3rd September.
