Wales finally managed to open their account in the U20 Championship 2017 with a 54-20 win over Samoa at Avchala Stadium on Thursday.

Both the teams were out of contention for the semi-finals as Wales managed a solitary win from three games while Samoa finished the tournament without a victory.

Even though, fullback Ricky Pauli Ene scored back to back penalties to get Samoa off to a flying start, Jared Rosser (10'), Aled Ward (20'), Shane Lewis-Hughes (29') and Sean Moore (39') crossed over for Wales while Ben Jones added conversions on all the four occasions to make it 28-6.

Lewis-Hughes provided further advantage to Wales with his second try coming in the 49th minute. Samoa made a brief comeback with tries from Alexander Pohla and Setu Enoka but Dane Blacker (70'), Will Griffiths (74') and Joe Goodchild (80') scored a try each in the final 10 minutes to complete a 54-20 win.

Despite, the win, Wales were positioned third in Pool A with six points and will face Scotland in the fifth place semi-final play-off while Samoa will take on Ireland in the ninth place semi-final play-off on Tuesday with both games scheduled to be played at Avchala Stadium.
