Wales’ newly appointed rugby union head coach, Steve Tandy, is confident that the team has the talent to achieve their goal of returning to the top five in world rankings.
Tandy, who takes over after a turbulent period for Welsh rugby, expressed his belief in the squad's potential and the importance of long-term development.
His appointment marks the first time a Welshman has led the national team since 2007.
Under previous coaches, including Warren Gatland and Wayne Pivac, Wales saw significant highs, including a 2019 Rugby World Cup semi-final appearance and a Six Nations Championship in 2021.
However, under Pivac, the team’s performance faltered, and Gatland’s return didn’t bring the desired improvements, culminating in his departure during the 2025 Six Nations.
The Welsh Rugby Union has set a target for the national team to be in the top five by 2029. Tandy, who ended a six-year stint as Scotland's defense coach, is determined to lead Wales back to its glory days.
“The privilege and the honour to be head coach of your national country is massive,” Tandy said.
“I believe in the talent we have in Wales, to get us to where we want to go. There’s not going to be a magic wand or a quick fix, but I do believe in the pathway.
"Ultimately, you want to have ambition. We want to meet those targets, but there’s a process to get there.”
