Wales international Louis Rees-Zammit has announced his return to rugby union following an 18-month stint pursuing a career in the National Football League (NFL).
The 24-year-old confirmed the decision on social media, declaring it was “time to come home,” though he has yet to reveal which club he will join for the upcoming season.
Rees-Zammit left Gloucester Rugby and stepped away from international rugby in early 2024 to chase his dream of playing in the NFL.
During his time in the United States, he signed with both the Kansas City Chiefs and later the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he did not make an appearance in a regular-season game for either franchise.
Reflecting on the experience, the winger described the journey as valuable but ultimately reaffirmed his passion for rugby.
“It’s been a great experience, but it’s time to come home,” he said.
“I’ve decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season.”
Although no club has been officially confirmed, top European sides competing in the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup are reportedly interested in securing his signature. His return adds a high-profile name to the transfer market ahead of the 2025–26 season.
Before his NFL move, Rees-Zammit was a standout performer for Gloucester, featuring in all six of their 2019/20 Investec Champions Cup group-stage games and helping the team reach the EPCR Challenge Cup quarterfinals in 2022.
He also earned a reputation as one of Wales’ most dynamic attacking players, with numerous international caps and tries to his name.
