Ulster have confirmed the appointment of former New Zealand international Craig Newby as the new skills coach of the club ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 41-year-old will take the place of Dwayne Peel, who joined the club in 2017 in the coaching panel with Dan Soper set to make a switch as an attack coach.

“The positive environment at Ulster, together with how the club is run – both on and off the field – are what I am looking forward to being a part of when I join later this year," he told the official website of the club.

"By bringing my personality and skillset as a coach to the role, I hope to build on the great work already underway.”

Newby has signed a one-year deal with Ulster and has previously worked with Cambridge, NEC Green Rockets, Coventry, Wasps U18, Harlequins U16 and most recently as forwards coach of England U20 Woman's side - a role he held since 2019.

He has made three Test appearances for New Zealand between 2004 and 2006 and also has the experience of playing for Newcastle Falcons, Leicester Tigers, Blues and Highlanders. He was also part of the New Zealand Sevens squad that clinched the gold medal in 2002 Common Wealth Games.

“I look forward to welcoming Craig, and to working alongside him as he makes the role his own and plays his part in our ambitions going forward as a squad," said Ulster head coach Dan McFarland.
