The Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed the signing of former Wales international Louis Rees-Zammit.

“Rees-Zammit participated in the international player pathway programme workout earlier this month, which provided the former rugby star with an opportunity to show NFL scouts what he could do," read a statement from the Chiefs,'

"His workout included a 4.44-second 40-yard dash, which would have ranked fifth among tailbacks at the 2024 NFL scouting combine.”

The 22-year-old made his professional rugby debut with Gloucester in 2018 and has gone on to play for them in 77 games. Rees-Zammit also represented Wales at under-18 level and was called to the Test squad under Wayne Pivac for the 2020 Six Nations campaign. He has been capped 32 times for Wales and was named in the squad for the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.

However, he quit his career with the Welsh Rugby Union earlier in the year to pursue a career in the NFL and impressed in the trials for the Chiefs.

"It's always been on my mind," Rees-Zammit told Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press on his decision to move to the NFL.

"My dad has been a massive role model to me because he brought me up loving the sport. He played the sport when he was younger so it's quite easy to love the game because I've been watching it from such a young age.

"So, it's always been in the back of my head, but it's just amazing to finally do it now."
