Stuart Hogg ruled out of remainder of New Zealand tour

Scotland international Stuart Hogg has been ruled out of the remainder of British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand following a cheek injury that he sustained during the tour game against Crusaders on Saturday.

The Glasgow fullback collided with his team-mate Conor Murray during the 19th minute of the game and was forced off the field and the scans have revealed a "facial bone fracture".

Warren Gatland has not named any replacement for Hogg yet as assistant coach Andy Farrell already indicated that the squad possess enough depth to cover for the 24-year-old.

"It is hugely disappointing for Stuart to have to return home early and for us to lose one of our touring party," said Lions head coach Gatland.

"Stuart has been a key member of our squad on and off the field and it is disappointing to see injury cut short his time with us in New Zealand.

"We all wish him the best with his recovery and we look forward to seeing him back in action in the future."

Jared Payne has been named at 15 for the Tuesday's game against Highlanders while Wales' Leigh Halfpenny is among the favourites to take take the position during the first Test against New Zealand. Anthony Watson, Elliot Daly and Liam Williams can also operate at fullback.

"I'm gutted to be leaving the Tour at this stage," said Hogg.

"It is an honour to have been involved in a second British and Irish Lions tour and I have hugely enjoyed my time with the squad and I'm very excited about the potential of this group.

"I'm disappointed to be leaving in this way but wish all the squad the best in the coming weeks and will be cheering them on from home."
