Leicester Tigers boss Steve Borthwick is expected to be the front-runner to take up the England coaching role according to reports.

Borthwick, who played over 50 times for England and another 390 appearances for Bath and Saracens combined had already been the forwards coach of the red rose team between 2015 and 2020 under Eddie Jones.

With the experience of working with Japan and Bristol Rugby as assistant coaches previously, the 43-year-old joined Leicester in 2020 and has since guided them to a Premiership title last season.

A decision on Borthwick's appointment is expected to be made later this week with Ronan O'Gara and Rob Baxter signing contract extensions with La Rochelle and Exeter Chiefs respectively.

Meanwhile, the Rugby Football Union announced the sacking of Jones on Tuesday following the team's dismal performance this year as they won just five out of the 12 games.

They finished fifth in the Six Nations tournament and had a solitary win in the autumn internationals from four matches with their only major success being an away series win against Australia during the summer tour. However, he guided the team to a Grand Slam, Six Nations title and a World Cup final during his seven year term.
