Italian international scrum-half Stephen Varney has committed his future to Exeter Chiefs by signing a new contract, continuing his stay in Devon after an impressive start to his time with the club during the 2025/26 season.

Varney has quickly established himself as a key part of Exeter’s matchday squad, featuring in eight of the club’s 13 fixtures so far this campaign.

The 24-year-old has settled seamlessly into the Chiefs environment, forming a productive half-back partnership with Harvey Skinner and contributing consistently to the team’s tempo and attacking structure.

His contract extension follows a standout performance in Exeter’s notable away win over Saracens at StoneX Stadium, where Varney crossed for a try in the Gallagher Premiership Round Seven clash.

Before joining Exeter, Varney spent five seasons with Gloucester, gaining valuable Premiership experience between 2019 and 2024. That background has helped him adapt quickly to Chiefs’ systems and expectations.

On the international stage, Varney made his Italy debut in 2020 and has since earned 36 caps. Most recently, he was named player of the match in Italy’s opening fixture of the 2025 Quilter Nations Series against Australia, underlining his growing influence at Test level.

“I’m delighted to be re-signing with Chiefs. Although I’ve only been here for this season, it’s been a place I’ve really enjoyed from day one," he said.

“The group of players, the staff, and the supporters have made it a special environment to be part of, and I’ve felt welcomed from the moment I arrived.

“I’m excited about what’s ahead and what this club can achieve moving forward, and I’m looking forward to continuing the journey and seeing what’s next for us as a group.”
