South African winger Kurt Lee Arendse has joined Japan's Sagamihara Dynaboars, becoming the latest Springbok to sign with a Japan Rugby League One club.
The 28-year-old, who recently won the 2023 World Cup and the Rugby Championship with South Africa, has moved to the Dynaboars on a sabbatical from the Pretoria-based Bulls.
Arendse, known for his speed and agility, previously made his mark in Sevens rugby before transitioning to the 15-man game, where he became a key figure for the Springboks.
The winger believes Japan's fast-paced style of play and hard grounds will complement his game, and he is eager to embrace both the rugby and cultural experiences during his stint.
"I think the hard grounds in Japan and the general approach to the game, with its fast pace and plenty of ball movement, is going to suit me," Arendse said.
"I'm really looking forward to the rugby, but also the cultural side of the experience."
The signing adds to a growing trend of Springbok players joining Japan's top-tier league, with Arendse becoming one of 11 regulars set to compete in the upcoming season.
Sagamihara Dynaboars coach Glenn Delaney expressed his excitement at the acquisition, noting that Arendse's dynamic playing style and international experience will be invaluable assets to the team.
The Dynaboars, who finished ninth in the 12-team league last season, just avoided the relegation playoffs. With Arendse in their ranks, the club hopes to improve its standings and leverage his skills to mentor younger, home-grown players.
The fourth season of Japan Rugby League One kicks off in December.
