Edinburgh flanker Hamish Watson insisted that Scotland will be happy to beat England with just penalties even if they are unable to end their try drought against the red rose at BT Murrayfield Stadium.

The last time Scotland scored a try against England at the venue was when Simon Danielli touched down in 2004 and the last Dark Blues' victory at Murrayfield over their rivals came in 2008.

However, the 26-year-old believes Scotland are well equipped to take on Eddie Jones' side in what will be a must-win encounter for the home side.

“England still defend very well, but just looking at ourselves as a team, I think compared to 10 years ago, five years ago, we do score a lot more tries, so we’ve been working on that.

“If we put England to one side for a while, we are scoring more tries against most of the other teams, so we’ve got to try to implement that against England.

“But I don’t think we have to score tries to win, it just means our defence is going to have to be pretty top notch.

“In the past we’ve had all kicks from Mossy (Paterson) to win games before and I think the players and the fans would take that if it came to that.

“Obviously we’re going to try to stick to our game plan and try to score tries, but if it comes down to kicks we’ll definitely take that.”

Scotland are currently positioned fourth in the table with a win and a defeat apiece in the first two games.
